NASDAQ Stock Market
The NASDAQ Stock Market is commonly known as just NASDAQ. The name signifies National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. This American entity is an electronic stock exchange and considered the largest electronic trading market for equity securities in the United States. It is located in New York City, and deals in the US dollar as currency. It is owned by the NASDAQ OMX Group who owns other markets. The five NASDAQ US Markets are The NASDAQ Stock Market, NASDAQ OMX Futures Exchange, NASDAQ OMX BX, NASDAQ OMX PHLX, and The NASDAQ Options Market. Through a primary data center, all five can be accessed. This entity was founded in 1971 and today, the FINRA or Financial Industry Regulatory Authority regulates it.
When it was founded, it was the first electronic stock market available. It started as a simple computer bulletin board and with the advances of the internet and technological evolution, now it is able to connect buyers and sellers electronically. It became the first company to start the online trading fever. Trading times include a pre-market session, a normal trading session, and a post-market session. The times are 7-9:30 am, 9:30-4 pm, and 4-9 pm respectively, Eastern Standard Time. Although being the electronic system it is this entity also has a holiday schedule just as the other major stock exchanges, which is subject to change. The common Holidays observed are Martin Luther King day, President's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, an early market close the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas day. When New Years day falls on a Saturday, it has no effect in the normal schedule of the market. During those times and any other designated holiday, the NASDAQ is closed. The NASDAQ Stock Market indexes include the NASDAQ Composite, the NASDAQ -100, NASDAQ Biotechnology Index, and the NASDAQ Bank. It has three levels of quotes being that the level 1 inside quote, the level 2, which shows public quotes with information on market dealers, and level 3, which is used by the market makers. The NASDAQ Stock Market has five markets being they the NASDAQ Capital Market, the NASDAQ Global Market, the NASDAQ Global Select Market, and the NASDAQ Portal Market.
This computerized system is able to price and exchange the stock of companies. Because it does not depend on floor trading, it gives investors instant quotes. It is also incorporated into the OTC also known as over the counter stock market. Pricing and exchange of stock can also be done over the phone or even over a teletype. In order to be able to be part of this system, companies will need to have at least one hundred thousand public shares and at least a minimum of one million dollar in assets, and at least five hundred shareholders. This is to be able to be considered by the NASDAQ.
